BNB Chain Tax Software Compared

Based on BSC-specific DeFi support and user feedback from forums.

Koinly

Best for BSC
Try Koinly →

Alternative: CoinLedger

  • BNB Chain wallet import via API
  • Dedicated BNB staking tax guide
  • Bridge merge tool for cross-chain transfers
  • Fewer total DeFi protocol integrations than Koinly
Try CoinLedger — code: CRYPTOTAX10 →

No tool is perfect — manual review may be needed for BNB/WBNB swaps, PancakeSwap V3 LPs, and opBNB transactions.

BNB Chain Tax Issues to Know

BNB Staking Rewards

BNB staking rewards are taxed as ordinary income when received, at your regular income tax rate. The Tax Court reaffirmed this in June 2026 (Paschall v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo. 2026-46). If you earn 0.01 BNB daily through auto-compounding, you technically have 365 taxable events per year. Binance.US may report staking income to the IRS via Form 1099-MISC — Binance.US says the threshold rises from $600 to $2,000 going forward, so check which figure applies to your filing year. Staking income is reportable whether or not you receive a form.

BNB to WBNB Wrapping

Wrapping BNB to WBNB is generally not taxable — it's the same asset. However, some tax software may not recognize this correctly. Look for transactions labeled as "trade" that should be "transfer" and correct manually.

PancakeSwap & DeFi

Swaps on PancakeSwap are taxable events. LP rewards and CAKE farming are taxable as income when received. Known issue: Some PancakeSwap V2 trades may only import one side — check for missing cost basis warnings.

opBNB Expansion

opBNB, BNB Chain's Layer 2 network, cut block time to 250ms in January 2026 and is seeing increased DeFi activity — PancakeSwap now operates on opBNB. Both Koinly (since June 2024) and CoinLedger list opBNB wallet import by public address, but opBNB is a separate network from BSC — add your address on opBNB as its own wallet, and spot-check that PancakeSwap and bridge activity there was captured.

Cross-Chain Bridges

Bridging BNB from Binance Chain to BSC is generally not taxable. Trust Wallet users may see confusion between BNB (Beacon Chain) and BSC (Smart Chain) — verify these are correctly classified as transfers.

BNB Chain Airdrop Alliance Program

BNB Chain's Airdrop Alliance Program has run several chapters of retroactive airdrops to BSC and opBNB users since 2024, and individual BSC projects continue to airdrop tokens. Each claim is ordinary income at fair market value on the date received, and that value becomes your cost basis for the tokens going forward.

Form 1099-DA and Per-Wallet Cost Basis

Brokers begin reporting gross proceeds on Form 1099-DA for 2025 transactions, but cost basis is only reported for assets bought and held at the same broker starting 2026. Anything moved in from a self-custody wallet — the norm for BSC DeFi — is "noncovered," so you still need to track your own cost basis. This pairs with Rev. Proc. 2024-28, which requires per-wallet (not universal) cost basis allocation for digital assets starting in 2025.

FAQ

Does BNB Chain report to the IRS?

No. BNB Chain is a decentralized network and doesn't report user activity. However, Binance.US and other centralized exchanges do report, and starting 2025, the IRS requires per-wallet cost basis tracking.

Is BNB staking taxable?

Yes. BNB staking rewards are taxed as ordinary income when received (IRS Rev. Rul. 2023-14). If you earn rewards daily through auto-compounding, each reward is a taxable event with its own cost basis.

How are PancakeSwap LP rewards taxed?

Liquidity provider rewards and CAKE farming are taxable as ordinary income when received. The fair market value at receipt becomes your cost basis for future sales.

What about BNB to WBNB wrapping?

Wrapping BNB to WBNB is generally not a taxable event — it's the same asset in wrapped form. However, some tax software may misclassify this as a trade. Review and correct if needed.
